joint investigation team

Quick Reference

A team set up under formal mutual legal assistance agreements to carry out joint investigations into particular offences with cross‐border elements, with a view to improving and speeding up investigation of the offences. Teams are made up of investigators (and sometimes magistrates, prosecutors, and specialist advisers) from two or more states who may carry out investigations in any of those states. Members working in a state other than their own are regarded as seconded to the national authorities of that state and, with the consent of their hosts, may undertake certain investigative measures or be present when such measures take place. See also assault; obstructing a police officer, etc.
