Overview
hold
Quick Reference
A large compartment below decks in a ship mainly for the stowage of cargo but also, in the days of sail, for stowing provisions for a voyage, and often the ship's gear. Modern dredgers discharge into their holds and vessels employed in the fresh food trade have special refrigerated holds to preserve the produce. Other specialized carriers have their holds designed for the particular cargo they carry. For example, trawlers have refrigerated holds for the stowage and preservation of the fish they catch. For safety reasons bulk carriers can only have their huge holds partly filled.
