Leading Pakistan-based Kashmiri Muslim separatist group advocating freedom from Indian control of Kashmir. One of three main separatist groups; the other two are Lashkar-i Taiba and Harakat-ul-Mujahidin. Founded in 1990 by Ahsan (also called Abdul Majid) Dar and Mohammad Abdullah Bangroo as an alternative to the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front; was established with assistance from Pakistan's intelligence service and received major political, diplomatic, moral, and military support from successive Pakistani governments. Recruited its members from sectarian forces of Sipah Sahabah Pakistan and trained them in al-Qaeda camps in Afghanistan. Currently headed by Sayyid Salahuddin in Pakistan. Mostly composed of natives rather than foreign recruits.
