History repeats itself comment on circumstances that replicate a previous situation; proverbial saying, mid 19th century. The comment was wryly extended by Rupert Brooke, in a letter of 1906, to ‘History repeats itself; historians repeat one another.’
the rest is history used to indicate that the events succeeding those already related are so well known that they need not be counted again.
