German brothers who pioneered the study of German philology, law, mythology, and folklore. They are chiefly known in England for their collection of fairy tales, Kinder‐und Hausmärchen (1812–14), of which an English translation by Edgar Taylor, illustrated by Cruikshank, was published in 1823 under the title German Popular Stories. The brothers also began the German etymological dictionary Deutsches Wörterbuch.
