Overview

Charles Gildon

(1665—1724) writer

Quick Reference

(1665–1724) English critic and dramatist.

He simplified Davenant's adaptation of Measure for Measure, The Law Against Lovers, as Measure for Measure; or Beauty the Best Advocate (1700), interpolating Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas between the acts. In 1710 he issued a volume of Shakespeare's poems fraudulently made to look like a seventh volume of Rowe's edition of the Works (1709).
