Patr. of Constantinople. At the Council of Florence in 1439 he supported the scheme for reunion, but later he opposed all such projects. He became a monk c.1450, taking the name of ‘Gennadius’. After the capture of Constantinople, in 1454 the Sultan made him Patriarch as ‘Gennadius II’. He was a prolific writer and translated the works of St Thomas Aquinas into Greek.
