(in genetics) Symbol W. A measure of the relative breeding success of an individual or genotype in a given population at a given time. Individuals that contribute the most offspring to the next generation are the fittest. Fitness therefore reflects how well an organism is adapted to its environment, which determines its survival. See also inclusive fitness; selection coefficient.
