A political system in which power is vested in an association of constituents, rather than in a central government set over and above them. The Federalist Papers were a series of articles written under the pen name of Publius by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay, between 1787 and 1788, in order to gain popular support for the then-proposed Constitution of the United States.
