Quick Reference

In Arthurian legend, King Arthur's magic sword, which according to legend he drew from the stone in which it was embedded to prove that he was the true king; by another account, it was given him by the Lady of the Lake. In Malory's Morte D'Arthur, when the king is mortally wounded, he tells Sir Bedivere to throw the sword back into the lake; when he finally obeys, an arm in white samite emerges from the water to catch and take the sword.
