German socialist and political philosopher, resident chiefly in England from 1842. The founder of modern communism with Karl Marx, he collaborated with him in the writing of the Communist Manifesto (1848). Engels also completed the second and third volumes of Marx's Das Kapital (1885; 1894). Engels's own writings include The Condition of the Working Classes in England in 1844 (1845).
