A symbol used by scholars who follow the ‘documentary hypothesis’ of the origins of the Pentateuch (q.v.) to denote the Elohistic source. It is distinguished from ‘J’ by its regular use of Elohim (‘God’) where ‘J’ uses Yahweh ( Jahveh or Jehovah).
