American military engineer who designed the layouts of Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NYC (1838–48—four times the size of Pére-Lachaise, Paris), and Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands, NY (1841–5). He deserves to be considered as one of America's foremost pioneers of landscape architecture in the first half of C19.
