Din wa-Dawlah
Quick Reference
Phrase first used by Ali ibn Rabban al-Tabari (d. 870) as the title of his book Al-din wa'l-dawlah fi ithbat nubuwwat Muhammad (Religion and the state). Indicates that Islam addresses both the religious and political affairs of the Muslim community. Utilized by contemporary Muslims to emphasize that Islam is not solely a religion (din) in the Western secularized sense of the word, but that it also affects matters of state and government (dawlah).
