1 From the Latin cumulus meaning ‘heap’, a genus of dense, isolated, and clearly defined clouds with vertical growth in bulges or domes, and a flattened, darker base. Sharply outlined, bulging cloud tops indicate vigorous growth. Occasionally a more ragged form occurs. See also cloud classification.
