Overview
CREB
Quick Reference
The abbreviation for cyclic AMP response element binding proteins. These proteins are required for the consolidation of short-term memory into long-term memory. Genes encoding CREBs have been cloned in Drosophila. One of these genes, dCREB2, encodes a protein, dCREBa, that activates transcription of genes that enhance the ability of the fly to consolidate short-term memory into long-term memory. The isoform dCREBb inhibits this process. See Chronology, 1982, Kandel and Schwartz; 1994, Tully et al., cyclic AMP.
