French historian of philosophy and educationalist. Cousin was a philosophical eclectic, merging influences from Thomas Reid, Kant, and British empiricism with French traditions. As minister of education under Louis-Philippe he was influential in setting the course of philosophical education in France for much of the nineteenth century. His own works include Fragments philosophiques (1826).
