Baron Pierre de Coubertin

(1863—1937)

Quick Reference

(1863–1937)

A French aristocrat whose passion for the educational and diplomatic potential of physical education and sport stimulated him to inspire a revival of the ancient Olympic Games. A congress in Paris in 1894 was followed by the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. De Coubertin opposed the participation of women in the Games, and combined his vision of international cooperation through sport with traditional elite, aristocratic, ethnocentric, and male-dominated attitudes. See also corruption; liminality; Olympic ceremony.
