Quick Reference

A sequence of colours at different seasons of the ecclesiastical year for vestments and other liturgical objects is first found in the use of the Augustinian Canons at Jerusalem in the early 12th cent. The standard sequence in the W. Church (white, red, green, purple, and black) was established much later. There are no definite rules about colours in the E. Church.
