A ‘bringing together’, used in various literary senses. In textual criticism, collation is the process of comparing differing manuscripts or editions of the same work in order to establish a corrected text. A new edition of the work may be also be described as a collation if it results from such a comparative exercise. In bibliography, collation is the process by which the printer or binder brings together the sheets of paper or folded sets of such sheets (known as quires) to make up a book or bound manuscript. A description of the physical make-up of a book, in terms of the number of its quires and the number of sheets per quire, is also called a collation.
