Chester

Quick Reference

The city was perhaps the seat of the bishops of Mercia, but for most of the Middle Ages it was not a bishopric. The see was refounded in 1541 by Henry VIII, who made the church of the dissolved abbey of St Werburg the cathedral, under a new dedication to Christ and the BVM.
