A publishing company founded in 1830 at 186 Strand, London, by Edward Chapman and William Hall. It owed much of its success to its early association with Dickens (Pickwick Papers having originated in a suggestion from Hall) and published many distinguished authors, including Carlyle, Kingsley, Mrs Gaskell, and Trollope, G. Meredith was for a time literary director. The firm was sold to Methuen in 1938.
