British dancer and choreographer. He studied at Sadler's Wells School and with Preobrajenska in Paris. He danced with Ballet Guild, Molly Lake's Continental Ballet, Original Ballet Russe, Ballet Rambert, and London Festival Ballet. As a choreographer he worked with Ballet der Lage Landen in Amsterdam (1954–7) for whom he made his most famous work, The Witch Boy (mus. L. Salzedo, 1956), additionally with other companies in Europe, S. America, and Japan. He was chief choreographer of London Festival Ballet (1965–70). A list of his works includes Past Recalled (mus. Bloch, 1953), Love Knots (mus. Hummel, arr. Salzedo, 1954), The Life and Death of Lola Montez (mus. Verdi, orch. Salzedo, 1954), London Morning (mus. Coward, 1959), Agrionia (mus. Salzedo, 1965), Beatrix (or La Jolie Fille de Gand, mus. Adam, Horovitz, 1966), Cage of God (mus. A. Rawsthorne, Western Theatre Ballet, 1967), Pythoness Ascendant (mus. Berio, 1973), Three Dances to Japanese Music (mus. Katada, Scottish Ballet, 1973), and Lulu (mus. Milhaud, Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet, 1976). He also staged versions of the classics including Swan Lake and Coppélia.
