A psychiatric disorder characterized by episodes of binge eating and compensatory behaviour (self-induced vomiting or laxative abuse) combined with an excessive concern over weight and body shape. A locus for susceptibility to bulimia nervosa-1 has been mapped to chromosome 10p. Both bulimia nervosa-2 and anorexia nervosa-2 have been associated with polymorphisms in the gene encoding brain-derived neurotropic factor.
