Argentinian writer whose short stories have had a great influence on European literature, and have been acclaimed as the earliest literary examples of magic realism. He began to publish prose and verse in the 1920s, but it was the French edition of a collection of stories, Labyrinths (Paris, 1953), that established his international reputation. His stories tend to be labyrinthine, metaphysical, and dreamlike, and explore matters of identity, fictionality, and violence. Borges himself was influenced by his reading of English literature, notably of Wilde, R. L. Stevenson, and Chesterton.
