first archbishop of Canterbury, was sent by Pope Gregory, with some forty monks, to preach the gospel in England in 597. He was favourably received by King Ethelbert of Kent who was afterwards converted and gave Augustine a see at Canterbury. Augustine was consecrated ‘Bishop of the English’ at Arles.
