(ATL)
Originally known as the Assistant Masters' and Mistresses' Association (AMMA), this teachers' union changed to its current name in 1993 in acknowledgement of the growing numbers of lecturers from further education colleges taking up membership. It is affiliated to the Trades Union Congress and has approximately 160 000 members, whose interests it supports through campaigning and negotiation.
