Quick Reference

(b. 1542, r. 1556–1605)

Mughal emperor, known as ‘The Great’. He showed a constructive interest in Hindu and other non-Muslim religious ideas, as well as encouraging a variety of religious practices, including Hindu yoga. At the same time, he abolished the jizyaḥ, a discriminatory tax on non-Muslims. In the modern period, some Indian nationalists saw his behaviour as a model for the kind of religious and social toleration to which an independent and democratic India should aspire.
