Was a son of Edward the Elder by his second wife Aelfflaed and succeeded his father 17 July 924. But by 2 August he was dead at Oxford, no more than twenty-five years old. So brief a reign and the fact that his successor Athelstan had a different mother may suggest a family feud or coup. The absence of any comment on Aelfweard as a prince (in contrast to the achievements of his father at the same age) may mean that he was not in robust health or of a military disposition. He was buried at Winchester.
