Anxiety and insecurity experienced by boys and men about their appearance or body images. In extreme cases, the complex can meet the criteria of body dysmorphic disorder. The term was introduced in 2000 by the US psychiatrist Harrison G. Pope, Jr (born 1947) in the title of his book, The Adonis Complex: The Secret Crisis of Male Body Obsession.
