US Republican statesman, 6th President of the USA (1825–29). The eldest son of President John Adams, he was minister to Britain (1809–14). As Secretary of State (1817–24) he helped to shape the Monroe Doctrine, the principle of US foreign policy that any intervention by external powers in the politics of the Americas is a potentially hostile act against the USA. After leaving office he was prominent in the campaign against slavery.
