Florus of Lyon 

(late 8th c. - c.860)

Trained at the cathedral school of Lyon, founded by Archbishop Leidrade in 799, Florus, who remained a deacon for most of his life, was above all the great Master of the school of Lyon and the valued counsellor of Archbishops Agobard, Amolo and Remigius.

Writer and theologian representative of the Carolingian Renaissance, he left numerous works of canon law on the Election of Bishops the privileges of clerics and against the Jews. In the liturgical domain, he gave us a commentary on the mass and a martyrology. He was also an ardent theologian who notably confronted Amalarius, Godescalc and especially John Scotus on the question of Predestination. Some poems and a few Letters of his also survive.
