MacDONALD, George (1824–1905)
Outstanding author of original *fairy stories and *fantasies, who was born at Huntly in Aberdeenshire, where his family, who were Congregationalists, farmed and ran a bleaching business. George was taught in a local school, then at King’s College, Aberdeen, to which he won a bursary. He began to write poetry and started to turn away from the Calvinism in which he had been brought up, refusing to believe that only the elect would be saved and feeling that God’s mercy was infinite.... ...
