Linguistics Professor, born in Pratapgarh, British India, and educated at the University of Allahabad, in English Literature, Education and History, then at the University of the Punjab and the University of Edinburgh. Following her PhD from Edinburgh, which was entitled ‘A Linguistic Study of Contrasting Features in the Style of Two Contemporary English Prose Writers’, she held various positions related to research into child language and literature, including the Child Language Survey at the University of Leeds and the Sociolinguistic Aspects of Children’s Stories at University College London.
