Chemicals that are used to kill plant species, especially *weeds. These may act by contact, where only the part of the plant covered by the chemical is affected, or may be systemic, where the active ingredient is translocated throughout the plant. Some are short-lived, breaking down quickly once applied. Others are residual and may be applied to the soil where the chemical remains active for weeks or even months. Selective herbicides are those that only affect the target species and are not active against others. Non-selective herbicides are those that are active against a wide range of species. ... ...
