The processes and mechanisms by which a society maintains and transforms its social order, formations, and relations across time and space. In other words, the means by which a society reproduces itself on a continuous basis without descending into anarchy and chaos. Such processes include social norms, policy and legislation, and institutions, which work discursively and materially to maintain the status quo. This status quo is continually under pressure through resistance and transgression, and as a result the rules and norms of society gradually transform. In certain circumstances, such as invasion by a foreign power, a political coup, or revolution, the condition of social reproduction can be radically reconfigured.... ...
