Leucas,
an island in the *Ionian Sea, opposite the coast of *Acarnania. It derived its name from the white limestone cliffs on its west coast. Its SW promontory, Cape Leucatas, has a sheer drop of 610 m. (2,000 ft.); suspected criminals were hurled from it, and if they survived the ordeal were rescued in boats (Strabo 10. 452).
