Postcards were used from about 1870 onwards. Picture postcards with views of streets and rural scenes became popular towards the end of the 19th century and were used on a very large scale during the first twenty years of the 20th century. Local history societies and individual authors have reproduced collections of picture postcards for many towns and villages, often comparing past and present scenes.
