The capacity to influence behaviours and actions. In sport, there is much talk of the qualities of the ‘leader’: the capacity of the captain on the pitch to inspire the other players; the ability of the decision-making coach or manager to affect the outcome of the contest. There remains, though, little systematic study of or analytical consensus on the basis of effective leadership in sport, whether this be of the team, the group, or the overarching sporting organization. If the elements of the successful or effective leader were more reliably known, there would be fewer examples of crises of succession in roles of responsibility. The study of leadership, as opposed to institutionalized forms of authority, could gain much from a fuller application of leadership models as developed in business and management studies and specialist forms of applied psychology.... ...
