(1903–57).A mathematician of international repute, born in Budapest, and later an American citizen. His work touched on most branches of both pure and applied mathematics. During the 1920s and 1930s his work included quantum theory, mathematical logic, ergodic theory, continuous geometry, and abstract algebra; his interest then turned to theoretical hydrodynamics.
