print-on-demand (POD)

True print-on-demand is the ability to reprint single copies of a book to order, thus eliminating the need for publishers to hold stock of slow-selling titles. POD also allows the production of small reprints that were previously uneconomic. Publishers can gather orders over a period of time and then reprint the necessary quantity. This means that a title need never go out of print, since, as long as it is archived properly, it can be printed to order.
