As workbooks conceived to respond to practical demands, grammar books should be viewed within the context of schools and teaching methods. The pedagogical models transmitted from Graeco-Roman antiquity survived in both Byzantium and the West, where the use of Attic Greek and Latin in literature, liturgy, and administration favoured the continuation of ancient grammatical studies. However, the gap between written and spoken language forced Byzantine and western teachers to adapt ancient descriptive grammar to the needs of their pupils, who had to learn literary Greek and Latin almost as if they were foreign languages. Ancient grammatical texts were considered models for the organization of the grammatical matter, but the content and the way to expound it underwent continuous modifications.... ...
