An *intaglio printing process that uses acid to eat lines or other marks into a metal *plate (usually copper) on which an acid-resistant resin ground has been laid. Using needles or other tools, the etcher draws directly into the ground, removing the resin and exposing the metal underneath. When the plate is immersed in an acid bath, the exposed metal is bitten to the required depth.
