The category of ephemera forms an elusive, sometimes contentious, element in the output of print. The aim of this essay is not to attempt to describe everything that can be identified as ephemera, but rather to trace the category’s porous boundaries and, in particular, to suggest how different forms have, over time, changed in their relationship to the book.
