Historians practice the craft of historical research and writing according to some basic procedures and models that exist within the scholarly discipline. In varying degrees of attention and self-criticism, historians also reflect upon the historical methodologies, guiding assumptions, established practices, pedagogical approaches, and theoretical principles that define and shape their disciplines. This abiding condition of historical self-consciousness goes by the general name and concept of historiography.
