Dominion Lands Act.
This 1872 act described how the newly acquired North-West Territories were to be surveyed and also specified what lands were available for free homesteads, railway subsidies, educational endowment, and other uses. The grid system featured six-mile-square townships of 36 equal sections (640 acres); homesteads for prospective farmers were 160 acres, the same size as those available in the American West.... ...
