Malaria is an ancient affliction of humanity. Its common presenting symptoms are periodic high fevers, hot sweats, and deep chills; its consequences range from episodic debilitation to major organ failure and death. Malarial infections occur when a mosquito infected with malarial parasites bites a human and injects the parasites into the blood stream. The parasite then undergoes one part of its life cycle within the human and, following another bite, a second part of its life cycle within the mosquito.
