It varies in its depth and degree of intensity according to the peculiarities of its places, peoples, and periods. It defies definitions and descriptions, especially ones designed by detractors, such as fundamentalism or jihadism. Historically, Islamic revivalist movements have stressed different objectives in particular socioeconomic and political circumstances.
