Diplomacy is the formalized system of procedures or the process by which sovereign states, usually through ambassadors or other representatives, conduct their official relations. They do so bilaterally and multilaterally—between individual states or alliance groupings and among themselves in more general contexts, such as peace conferences or sessions of international organizations. Diplomacy is often considered an alternative to economic sanctions or military force. It also can have a social and cultural function, overcoming estrangement between peoples. Primarily an approach to international relations developed in Western states, diplomacy has Eastern antecedents as well, and in the early twenty-first century diplomacy embraces the participation of nations of Asia and other non-European regions of the world.... ...
