(b. 1934),former wife of Nelson Mandela and a prominent and controversial figure in South African politics. Regarded by many South Africans as the Mother of the Nation for her long‐standing commitment to the antiapartheid struggle, by the end of the twentieth century Winnie Mandela had become one of the most controversial figures in South Africa, following accusations that she financed and led a criminal gang out of her Soweto home during the late 1980s.
